EPF and ETF

EPF is abbreviation of Employees' Provident Fund which is a scheme of employees in Sri Lanka, and it functions under the Central Bank of Sri Lanka since 1958. The EPF targets employer retirement and future economic benefits. It is a jointed action plan and contribution by employer and employee. Both of them have to contribute to save money from each month. It is a must scheme to the private sector. ETF is Employees' Trust Fund which is similar to EPF. However, employer should contribute and no contribution from employee. Also, ETF contribution is less than EPF saving, and withdrawal of ETF saving money is easily as it can withdrew before the retirement.

Total EPF and ETF saving per salary is 23% which should be contributed by employer and employee. However, 8% of employee’s salary would be deducted from basic salary and added to the EPF. The rest of 15% will be contributed by the employer. The 15 percentage of saving will be divided by 12% and 3%, and they would be added respectively to EPF and ETF. Ex: 8% + 12% + 3% = 23% (EPF = 20% & ETF = 3%)

If your monthly salary is 90,000, you will get monthly net salary 82,800 while you contribute 8% to EPF saving which is 7,200 (82,800 + 7,200 = 90,000). Meanwhile your employer contributes 12% of EPF (10,800) and 3% of ETF (2,700). Your total monthly EPF and ETF (23%) savings will be 20,700. Therefore, your monthly earning will be 103,500 (Net salary + Total EPF & ETF).
