Postal codes in Sri Lanka was introduced in 1997 to improve the efficiency of the postal service. You may know what postal code is. It also known as zip code. It is series of numbers and/or letters used to identify a specific geographic area for mail delivery purposes. In Sri Lanka, people mostly use the term as Sri Lanka post code instead of Sri Lanka zip code. Anyway remember that both terms are same.
Postal codes of Sri Lanka consist of five digits. It does not consist letters, except in some conditions. The first digit representing the province and the second digit representing the district. The last three digits representing the specific area / post office within the district. Each postal code is unique to a particular location, making it easier for postal services.
Example: Postal code of Dehiwala is 10350. Here, the first digit (1) represent the province (Western) and the second (0) represent district (Colombo), and the last three represent the city (Pannipitiya) / post office. Likewise, it uses to other districts and their areas.
There are 25 districts in Sri Lanka. Each district owns its postal code. The most populated districts such as Colombo, have a long list postal codes. The less populated districts may have fewer postcodes.
